Plakias is located in southern Crete, about 30 minutes' drive or 35 km south of Rethymnon. The houses of Plakias hug a large crescent-shaped bay, with most buildings near the small harbour.Plakias began to expand after 1970; before that, there were no more than 10 houses. Today there are many small hotels in Plakias, apartments and tavernas to meet the needs of the multitude of summer visitors.
Situated 39 kilometers far from Rethymnon, at the Southern Coast of Crete, within the Plakias' Bay in front of the homonymous village, it is found a long sandy beach with crystal clear water and affected by the summer winds.
It is very popular and gets crowded in summer. The eastern part is kept for nudists. The beach is well organised, it offers accommodation facilities. Food and drink are available at the sea front taverns and restaurants; the visitor can also find facilities for swimming, sunbathing and sea sports, especially diving excursions and diving lessons.
Access from Rethymnon is possible by public bus, taxi and rented or private car and motorbike.
A fabulous setting of cliffs, mountains and a huge sweep of golden sand make this beach a wonderful place for all-over tanning and fine snorkelling. The sea shelves gently, making it suitable for families, and there are showers available. Refreshments are brought to the beach in season, and umbrellas are available.
The nude area is the last section of the beach, to the left as you face the sea, and unsurprisingly it is often the most popular part of the whole bay.
